Back pain
The experience of back pain can be very distressing and can effect our ability to move about freely or to work.
It is possible to discrimnate between what we may call i) backache ii) back pain due to underlying pathological conditions.
i) The vast majority of us suffer with backache: stiffness or immobility at the base of our back associated with muscular aching. Often muscular aching can progress to such an extent as to become painful. Overall backache can be described as a stiffening, tightening contractive immobility of your low back. The main medical findings are just that: muscular spasms and joint immobility. There is nothing adnormal to be detected during pathological investigatioons such as x-ray. Here at Mill Road Osteopaths we take the treatment of backache very seriously, using a range of skilled treatment techniques, which often have a positive outcome.
ii) There are a number of pathological conditions which can present with low back pain. These include boney pathologies, such as osteoporosis, intervertabral disc herniations and prolapses. Obviously it is important that these conditions are detected, then properly diagnosed and supervised by a General Practitioner. If there is any clinical reason to suspect you have one of these conditions then you will, of course, be advised to visit your GP.
