What to expect when you visit MIll Road Osteopaths
Do
feel free to arrive early for your appointment and read the papers and
magazines whilst you wait in our comfortable reception room. You will
be asked for a few preliminary details to start your case file.
The
osteopath will ask you to walk through to a private treatment room
and take a seat whilst you give a case history. The osteopath will ask
you to discuss what your problem seems to be. You will then be asked
about your past medical history. Once the case history is complete the
osteopath will ask you to prepare for the examination and treatment.
You will be asked to rest on the couch for the examination. Although
osteopaths are not doctors, at Mill Road Osteopaths you will
receive a quick and competent diagnostic screening which usually
takes no longer than 2 or 3 minutes. If anything is found during these
proceedures that is out of the ordinary the osteopath may suggest you
visit your GP to see if further tests are necessary.
The osteopath will then use his diagnostic skills to detect areas of
tension and restriction in your body. For example a person suffering
from neck and shoulder soreness may be found to have hypertonia
(tension) in their trapezii and levator scapulae muscles together with
restrictions (limit to free movement) in their cervical and upper
thoracic spines. The osteopath will discuss his findings with you and suggest what can
be done in the way of treatment and what the likely outcome of
treatment is.

Treatment by an osteopath
Now that you have a diagnosis your
osteopath can begin the hands-on treatment itself. Please note that the
osteopath will discuss treatment with you as much as you like and
attempt to answer any questions you may have regarding what to expect.
A good proportion of treatment by your osteopath at Mill Road Osteopaths is
soft tissue technique. This is highly skilled and specific massage of muscles.
Another important part of treament by an osteopath is gentle, highly
specific movements of affected joints known as mobilisation. Although
very gentle, you may feel greatly relieved to find your affected joints
returning to an increased level of mobility (a freeing up of movement)
with this technique.
If necessary your osteopath may decide that a spinal adjustment is
required. Of course your osteopath will have performed a series a very
specific tests to validate the use of this technique. Your osteopath will also check that you are
happy to have this proceedure performed. Once all the preliminaries are
taken care of the actual technique is quick and often very effective.
Your osteopath quickly attempts to increase movement within your
spinal apophyseal joints. There may be an audible 'click' as this
proceedure is performed. If this technique works well for you, you may,
like many people, report an immediate sense of relief.
Relaxation techniques are often taught at Mill Road Osteopaths.
These can include advice on diaphragmatic respiration - regulating your
breathing. Also gentle work at the top of your neck and around your
head and face - cranial work.
If necessary your osteopath is well trained to give you advice on
inflammatory conditions, exercises, returning to exercise, work
posture, driving posture and computer use.
